What is Home-Based Early Childhood Education?
Home-based early childhood education (ECE) is licensed, quality childcare that takes place in a home setting rather than a large purpose-built centre. In Aotearoa New Zealand, home-based ECE services are regulated by the Ministry of Education and follow Te Whāriki, the national early learning curriculum — just like centre-based services, but delivered in a smaller, more personal environment.
How is home-based ECE different from a daycare centre? The biggest difference is group size. A daycare centre may have dozens of children across several rooms, with little ones moving between educators as staffing shifts change. In home-based care, a single qualified educator cares for a maximum of four children. That means consistency — your child forms a secure attachment with one familiar caregiver who knows their routines, preferences, and personality inside out, rather than being one of many in a busy room.
Why do families choose home-based ECE? Many parents tell us it's the closest thing to being at home. Days are unhurried, meals are shared around a real table, and learning grows naturally from everyday moments — baking, gardening, trips to the park, and plenty of unstructured play. It suits children who thrive in calmer environments, families wanting flexible hours, and anyone who values strong, trusting relationships between caregiver, child, and parent.
Blue Lion Homebase provides licensed home-based ECE from our setting in Māngere Bridge, Auckland. If you're in Māngere, Onehunga, or the wider south-Auckland area and looking for home-based childcare, we'd love to show you around and talk about whether home-based care is the right fit for your family.
